The Monhegan School Department invites applications for the position of Superintendent of Schools, offering an extraordinary opportunity to lead and support education in one of Maine’s unique communities.
Located 12 nautical miles off the coast, Monhegan Island is known for its breathtaking natural beauty, vibrant artistic heritage, and close-knit community. At the heart of the island is the Monhegan School—a one-room schoolhouse currently serving five students in grades K–8.
About the Position
This is a part-time role (56 service days annually), ideal for an experienced educational leader seeking a flexible schedule while making a meaningful difference. While island residency is not expected, periodic visits to the island are arranged to maintain close engagement with students, staff, and the community.
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide educational leadership and administrative oversight to ensure high-quality learning.
  • Support the academic, social, and emotional growth of K–8 students in a personalized, small-school environment.
  • Oversee educational support for high school students attending schools on the mainland.
  • Build strong relationships with staff, families, and the community to foster collaboration and engagement.
  • Ensure compliance with all state and local education requirements.
Desired Qualifications
  • Proven leadership experience in education, with a strong understanding of K–8 curriculum and instruction.
  • Background in small, rural, or one-room school settings preferred.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and independent decision-making skills.
  • A passion for personalized learning and commitment to student-centered education.

Substitutes -  $23.95/hr in School Year 25-26

CHRC certificate from fingerprinting through Dept of Ed system required. 
Schedule fingerprinting through DOE's partner if you do not already have the clearance that lasts 5 years.

         - Note using any other system or police department will NOT count.
